Remote Online Notarization (RON)

What RON is, which US states allow it, and how DocFila integrates with notary networks for remote signing.

What RON actually is

Remote Online Notarization is a notarial act performed over a live audio-visual connection between the signer and a commissioned notary public. The notary verifies ID via knowledge-based authentication and credential analysis, witnesses the signature on screen, and applies an electronic notarial seal.

Where it's allowed in the US

Most US states have permanently authorised RON post-2020 (NY, FL, TX, VA, OH, IL, AZ, NV, IA, KY, TN, ID, MN, OK, UT, WA, WV, MT, MI, NE, MO, ND, SD, IN, NM, MD, NJ, KS, AR, AL, LA, WI, NC, NH, DE, RI, CO, MS, OR, ME). California requires the signer to appear at a physical notary; Connecticut and South Carolina have narrower rules.

Cross-border recognition

RON is recognised state-to-state under the Full Faith and Credit Clause, and most countries accept apostilled RON documents for international use. Check with the receiving jurisdiction first for high-stakes filings.
