How to Redact a PDF Permanently (Free, Secure)
By DocFila Team · April 25, 2026 · 6 min read
Drawing a black box over text in a PDF doesn't actually remove the text — anyone can copy-paste the hidden content underneath. Real redaction permanently destroys the data. This guide shows how to redact PDFs the right way, for free, on any device.
Why drawing black boxes is dangerous
The most common redaction failure: opening a PDF in a basic editor, adding a black rectangle over sensitive text, and exporting. The rectangle is a separate annotation layer — the text underneath remains in the file. A 2-second copy-paste reveals everything. Federal agencies, law firms, and even The New York Times have leaked confidential information this way.
Real redaction in DocFila
- Open the PDF → PDF Tools → Redact.
- Drag a box around the text you want to redact. The text underneath is replaced with a solid black rectangle and removed from the file's text layer.
- For images, the redacted area is rasterised so no underlying pixels remain.
- Tap Find & Redact to redact every instance of a word, phone number, or pattern (SSN, credit card) in one pass.
- Tap Apply & Save. The file is rewritten — there is no "undo" once saved.
What you should always redact
- Social Security / national ID numbers
- Full bank account / credit card numbers
- Home addresses (especially in court filings or shared contracts)
- Medical record numbers and diagnoses
- Salary figures (when sharing offer letters as templates)
- Email addresses and phone numbers of third parties
Verify the redaction worked
After saving, reopen the PDF and try to select the redacted areas with copy-paste. If nothing copies, the redaction succeeded. Run a text search for the words you redacted — there should be zero results.
Bonus: redact metadata too
PDFs carry hidden metadata (author name, software version, creation date, edit history). Tap PDF Tools → Strip Metadata after redacting to remove it. This is critical when leaking-anonymously-style use cases matter — and it's a good habit for any sensitive document.
